Umtiza Arts Festival Showcases the Best of East London's Creative Talent
Art lovers are in for an unforgettable evening as the Umtiza Arts Festival returns with one of its most anticipated visual arts events, celebrating the remarkable creativity and diversity of artists from East London and the Eastern Cape. Opening on Friday, 24 July 2026 at 18:30, the Ann Bryant Art Gallery will once again become the heart of the region's artistic community as it hosts two major exhibitions under one roof—the prestigious Main Gallery Exhibition and the ever-popular East London Fine Art Society's Anything but Painting Exhibition. This year's response from artists has been exceptional. The Main Gallery Exhibition features 101 artworks by 27 artists, presenting an inspiring collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media and contemporary works that reflect the richness of artistic practice in the Eastern Cape. Running alongside this exhibition, the Anything but Painting Exhibition in the historic Coach House has attracted 18 artists exhibiting 60 artworks, demonstrating the incredible breadth of creative expression beyond traditional painting. Visitors can expect an exciting variety of ceramics, textiles, printmaking, photography, sculpture, fibre art, drawing and mixed-media works. The exhibitions bring together an impressive line-up of established and emerging artists. Among those participating are acclaimed names including Marlene Neumann, Sonwabiso Ngcai, Andrew Mogridge, Mziwoxolo Makalima, Steve Sanfilippo, Craig Banks, Margery Bradfield, together with many talented artists whose work continues to shape the creative identity of the region. The Umtiza Arts Festival has become an important platform for artists to exhibit professionally, engage with collectors, and connect with the wider public. It is a celebration of creativity that continues to strengthen East London's vibrant arts community while encouraging new audiences to discover the wealth of talent found throughout the Eastern Cape. Adding to the excitement of the evening, visitors will be treated to a live music performance, while the Coach House upstairs gallery will come alive with an innovative Performance Art Exhibition, creating a dynamic and immersive cultural experience unlike any other. Whether you are an experienced collector, an emerging artist, a student, or simply someone who appreciates creativity, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience outstanding local art, meet the artists, and celebrate the remarkable talent flourishing within our community. Guests will be welcomed with complimentary cocktails and refreshments, making the opening evening both a social and cultural highlight on the city's calendar. The Ann Bryant Art Gallery extends a warm invitation to the public, collectors, businesses, schools, and visitors to attend this special event and support the artists whose passion and dedication continue to enrich the cultural life of East London.
